Imagine being the employee who forgot to renew the most important domain in the world.

Google forgot to renew its domain name.

Some dude who was an intern at Amazon was just trying to learn the Google Domains interface.

As an experiment, he just put in Google, not expecting it to be available.

He saw that it was available. He thought it was a bug. He was curious. He followed through. He checked out.

He bought Google’s domain for 12 bucks because they forgot to renew their domain name.

It was transferred to him.

He saw all the secret domains that Google owned.

And then a few minutes later, Google refunded his purchase and took it back.

Reverted the purchase, refunded him, and then gave him a reward of $6,006.13, which if you squint really hard at that number, it spells out Google.
