31 March Don’t be a fooled this April 1st March 31, 2016By George McQuiston Announcements, Fall Bear Season, General Information, Spring bear season Hunt Applications, Spring Bear Season 0 April 1st is a very important day in the life of an Idaho hunter. It is the first day you can put in for trophy species bighorn sheep, moose and mountain goat as well as, my favorite day, the first day of the spring 2016 backcountry bear hunting season. Applications for bighorn sheep, moose and mountain goat begin April 1 and run through April 30 so don’t delay in getting your application in if you want a chance at any of these. Remember Idaho does NOT have a point system (a good thing in my mind) so everyone is on equal footing in the draw process. And you will certainly never hunt a sheep, moose or mountain goat if you don’t apply! Spring bear season is one of my favorite times of year. It is a sure cure for cabin fever and a good time to log some saddle time on the old steeds we have been feeding all winter and is also a good time to start our young mules and colts. Think about it, if they have a come apart and scatter a little bear bait, I figure it is better than scattering me! The backcountry units start about 15 days earlier than the front range seasons do, offering the hunter who is willing to work a little hard to access the backcountry a 2 week extended season along with, in most cases, a chance at 2 bears to boot! This spring may a bit interesting as there is still plenty of snow in the high country. Grass is starting to grow already in the low country, but you generally have to climb some pretty high passes to get into the backcountry, so access may be a bit extra challenging this spring! So whether it is spring bear hunting or bighorn sheep on your mind don’t be a fool, get off the couch and either apply for a trophy tag or go hunting…or both! We are always happy to visit with you about best options for trophy species or simply talk hunting, so contact us if you have any questions. See you in the woods! Idaho defines trophy species as Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goats and Moose. If you have the desire to hunt one of these species in Idaho this year, it is time to put in your application. No Horse Rides this Summer at Snowbird Normally about this time each summer, we are announcing that the horses are coming to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, but this year is different. Snowbird began a large scale construction project that will consume all of this summer and next so we won’t be offering rides again at Snowbird until summer 2017. April is the Time to Apply for Trophy Species Bighorn Sheep, Moose and Mountain Goat Beginning April 1 you can apply for what Idaho terms as “trophy species” including bighorn sheep, mountain goat and moose. As much as I disdain having to draw for any hunting opportunity, these 3 species are rare enough that it is impossible to maintain a healthy herd AND offer an over the counter opportunity, so they regulate through a drawing process. The beauty, and yes I did say beauty, of Idaho’s draw...... Are You Going Hunting this Year? By now most of you should have gotten that “lump of coal” we call the draw results for our western big game hunting adventures. That hope of drawing for that “special” tag we seem to continually wait for. If your results looked like mine and read “unsuccessful” for all species applied, don’t lose hope. I know I have said it a lot and am saying it again…Idaho is the best kept secret in the hunting world today. April is the Time to Apply for Trophy Species in Idaho If you are considering hunting Mountain Goat, Moose or Bighorn Sheep in Idaho, April is the time to apply. An Idaho Elk Hunt to Remember This is a “short” story about a hunter/client/friend of ours who is part of a group of guys we affectionately call the “Cali boys”. His name is Bill Bunch and someone in his group has hunted with us consistently for 11 straight seasons. He is one of those guys that in my opinion is a true sportsman. Let me explain.
